History of Drums
It consists one membrane, which is known as drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck directly with the player’ s hand, in order to produce a sound. Often a resonant head on the underside of the drum typically turned into a slightly lower pitch than the top drum head. They usually made of wood material such as fiberglass and acrylic and available in various sizes and weights.

Each material and size has their own properties. The sound of these drums can be influenced by the thickness and material of the head. Tightening the head will make a higher pitch. Some other factors which determine the sound of the drum are the thickness, length and the diameter of the shell.

There are some other techniques which have been used to cause drums to make sound as the thumb roll. Generally, Drums are the world’s oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design of these drums remained same for several years.

Important Facts about the Drum
Drums may be played individually by using a single drum like djembe and other are played in a set of two or more, all played by one or more player. A different number of drums together with cymbals, then form the basic modern drum kit.

These are appearing as far back as 6000 BC. Mesopotamian excavation unearthed small cylindrical drums dated 3000 BC.

At the time of the modern era, the other drum – related percussion instruments were often used by many people. The bass drum would be played by one musician with the cymbals and snare played by others. By the time they became unwieldy and more expensive. Several attempts were made to consolidate all these instruments so that they could be played by one person.

As the music evolved, the modern drum set – up evolved out of marching bands and also the Vaudeville and jazz eras. The foot – operated bass drum appears in 1909, which freed up the hands to play other things for the first time. The modern rock drum is also called a “kit” and they can come in many different and highly personalized configurations. These are:-

  • A typical kit is centered on the snare drum and it has wires across the skin stretched across the bottom of the drum. The snare is used in conjunction with the bass.
  • The bass drum is played by a foot pedal.
  • Kits have one or more tom – toms of different diameters and depth, which are used to produce additional sounds.  The mounted toms have special stands and floor toms have their own legs and stand on the floor.
